Whole Life-Cycle Carbon Assessments
As part of the drive to Net Zero, developers in London are now required to assess and report on the carbon emissions produced during the construction, day-to-day use, and eventual demolition of any new building. In addition, they are required to justify any decision to demolish existing buildings rather than refurbishing or retrofitting, and to demonstrate the retention, reuse and recycling of structures and materials already available on site.
The Whole Life-Cycle Carbon Assessment (WLCA) is intended to promote and encourage the re-use and refurbishment of existing buildings and materials, and to reduce unnecessary carbon emissions from demolition, rebuilding, the use of new materials, and the disposal of potentially re-usable structural elements.
