What is Rain Water Harvesting?

Rain and water harvesting collects and stores water for reuse.

How Does Rain Water Harvesting Work?

  • Rainwater falls on the roof and flows along gutters through down pipes into a tank where the water is then collected
  • The water is filtered by an integrated filter
  • The filter captures nearly all the water
  • This removes unwanted particles from the rainwater
  • The filtered water is then directed down through the calmed inlet to the bottom of the tank
  • The water is deflected upwards purifying the existing tank water
  • This ensures a natural biological process takes place.

Rainwater collected on the roof of an average sized house can save up to 50% of households’ domestic needs. Both domestic systems and commercial systems can be implemented.

Disadvantages of Rain Water Harvesting

  • The rainfall can be unreliable in this country- needs to be a minimum of roughly 2000 mm/year and should be spread in at least two (long) rain-periods of three months without total drought in between
  • Cost per capita is higher for a rainwater harvesting system than for a communal pump or well
  • Communication with the installer/ retailer is important for maintenance
  • Cost of setting up the gutter- existing gutters may need replaced
  • Large, non- leaking storage containers are needed
  • Mould can grow if rainwater is left for long periods of time
  • Can also attract insects to snakes- this can be prevented if used within 60 days of collection.
